Having just spent a week in Italy, I feel a desperate urge to write about both my literal and linguistic adventures. This post will be dedicated to the latter and the former will arrive soon after I have finished translating my holiday diary. Before I left for Sorrento, I was told to “speak lots of Italian,” so I was under significant pressure to test my abilities in public for the first time. So, the burning question is: did I do as I was told?
My first use of Italian beyond the standard “grazie” and “per favore” was a somewhat shameful interaction between myself and a cleaner: abbiamo lasciato la chiave nella camera = we have left the key in the room.
